To be frank, shapewear isn’t typically my first choice. I’m not one for bodycon outfits and when I do opt for something a bit more snug, I usually forego restrictive shapewear in favour of comfort.
While I firmly believe no one needs shapewear, certain ensembles can benefit from a sleeker foundation underneath – whether to prevent patterns from warping, conceal underwear lines, or simply boost your confidence. Having occasionally wished for a more streamlined silhouette with certain outfits, I decided to give Spanx’s brand new SpanxShape range a whirl – and the results were nothing short of astounding.

The SpanxShape collection takes premium cotton shapewear up a notch with performance features like sweat-wicking, breathability, and a lightweight feel. Crafted from a blend of spandex elastane, nylon, and Supima cotton, it’s a market-first and boasts Spanx’s signature four-way stretch.
The fresh-off-the-rack SpanxShape line includes shapewear separates like vest tops and knickers that sculpt and smooth your figure. They can be worn together or separately, depending on which areas you want to refine.
The range offers full briefs, vest tops, thongs, and mid-thigh shorts in an array of colours including beige, black, and softer pastel hues. I decided on the SPANXshape Invisible Supima Cotton Cami, priced at £78, and the SPANXshape Invisible Supima Cotton Thong, costing £56, both in black. I felt these two pieces would be incredibly versatile and pair well with a variety of outfits.
As a size 14 on the bottom and a size 12 on top, I opted for both shapewear items in large.
So, how did the SpanxShape range fit?

I won’t sugarcoat it – wriggling into the Cotton Cami was a bit of a mission. The compression fabric is thick and stretchy, but getting it just right takes some effort.
However, once it was on, the transformation was immediate. My usual lumps and bumps were smoothed out, my waist appeared more cinched, and the long length of the vest extended this smoothing effect down to my hips.
The straps are adjustable and there’s no compression in the chest area, but if you’re busty, you might want to size up. It did flatten my chest slightly, which could be less comfortable for some. Once on, though, I found it surprisingly comfy. It didn’t roll up at the bottom or feel like it was slipping down.
The Cotton Thong was a breeze to put on and super comfortable to wear. The thong style ensured no visible panty lines under my dress, and the waistband stayed put without any rolling down.
I’ve given shapewear thongs a go in the past and they’ve ridden up with every step, which is far from comfy. But, thankfully, I didn’t have that issue with the shapewear Cotton Thong. It also features a high waistband that comfortably sits over my hips, so there’s no awkward digging or ‘muffin top’ situation.
Did they work?
The SpanxShape range made me look like I’d dropped a dress size

Absolutely. The transformation from both pieces was quite remarkable. I slipped into a black figure-hugging dress that, while stretchy, tends to highlight some lumps and bumps. But this time, I was amazed at the difference.
My waist appeared more defined, giving me a more streamlined hourglass figure that genuinely made me look like I’d dropped an entire dress size. While a few bumps were still visible (which is totally okay), they were significantly less noticeable, allowing the dress’s cut to take centre stage without detracting from its silhouette.
While I might not be reaching for my SpanxShape pieces daily, they’ll certainly come in handy on days when I need a confidence boost or want to streamline my outfit. You can explore the full SpanxShape range now.
For other options, I’ve always been a fan of Boux Avenue’s shapewear. The Smoothing Soft-Stretch High Waisted Thong is a budget-friendly choice at £16 and doesn’t roll down or ride up as you wear it. Its waistband is super wide and comfortable, and the fit is flattering and smoothing without being overly tight.
Marks and Spencer also boasts a fabulous selection, offering everything from waist-sculpting knickers and bodysuits to slip dresses and cami tops. Prices vary across the range, but generally, it’s a fantastic budget-friendly choice if you’re on the hunt for some new additions to your wardrobe, reports the Mirror.
