The Sûreté du Québec in Outaouais says it is cracking down to reduce “dangerous” driving during the afternoon rush hour as traffic piles up on Highway 5 to access Autoroute 50, which heads north and east to Gatineau suburbs.
“Some motorists travel in the left lane (of Highway 5) and wait until the last minute to change lanes to take the exit of Highway 50,” SQ said in a release.
Others just stop their vehicles in the left lane of Highway 5 to wait for a chance to turn right, police said.
“In addition to violating the Highway Safety Code, (the actions) can compromise the safety of road users,” the SQ said.
More than 11 tickets, each for $336 and three demerit points, have been issued by the police this week.
“Note that other operations are planned in the coming days at this location when you return home,” the SQ warned.
