The Bad Egg

Once upon a time in a quaint village nestled between rolling hills and verdant forests, there was a small farm owned by Old Man Jenkins. The farm was famous for its eggs, which were said to be the finest in the entire region. Every morning, the villagers would line up outside Jenkins’ farmhouse to buy his fresh eggs, which they believed brought good luck and health.

Old Man Jenkins had a flock of hens, all of whom were well-cared for and loved. Among them was a peculiar hen named Cluckie. Unlike the others, Cluckie was small and a bit scruffy, with feathers that never seemed to lay flat. But Cluckie had a unique talent—she could lay golden eggs. However, there was a catch: Cluckie could only lay one golden egg a year, and no one knew when it would happen.

One chilly autumn morning, as the first frost covered the ground, Jenkins found a golden egg in Cluckie’s nest. Delighted, he knew that this egg would fetch a high price and secure the farm’s future through the winter. News of the golden egg spread quickly, and soon, people from neighboring villages and even towns were coming to see the wonder for themselves.

Amidst the excitement, a sly and greedy merchant named Vance heard about the golden egg. Vance was known for his cunning ways and was always on the lookout for ways to make a quick fortune. He devised a plan to get his hands on the egg and decided to visit Old Man Jenkins
