‘This £45 trending jacket is a must-have for spring and generously sized’

While the weather might still be chilly and dreary, it’s never too early to start planning your spring wardrobe – and I reckon I’ve found this season’s must-have jacket.

If you’re like me and missed out on last year’s ‘barn jacket’ trend – a mid-weight, loose-fitting style typically in beige or khaki with a brown cord or leather collar – you’ll be thrilled to know they’re making a comeback for spring 2025, and this one from Marks and Spencer is already turning heads.

The Cord Collared Relaxed Jacket from M&S, priced at £45, is already creating quite a buzz thanks to its effortless style and value for money – and I’ve already bagged mine.

As someone who leans more towards casual than smart dressing, I loved these barn jackets when they first hit the scene last year for their their easy-to-throw-on style, but never found one that really suited me, or fit my budget. So when I saw several influencers raving about this one from M&S, I snapped it up straight away.

Made from canvas with a corduroy collar, it’s lightweight yet thick enough to keep you cosy during spring’s unpredictable weather, and feels really high quality.

It has a boxy, slightly oversized fit, meaning you can still layer jumpers underneath (although if you prefer a snugger fit, I’d recommend buying one size smaller than your usual – something other shoppers have also suggested).

This jacket looks fab paired with jeans, a tee and trainers, and I reckon it would look just as good thrown over dresses when the weather warms up enough to ditch the thick black tights. Priced at £45, it’s also a total steal, reports the Mirror.

My only minor niggle is its length; being 5’8″ and a fan of oversized jumpers and tees, I’d prefer it a little longer, hip-length rather than waist-length – but perhaps this is the garment needed to coax me out of my baggy attire and into something a bit more tailored (it looks ace with high-waisted trousers, for instance).

Another thing worth mentioning is that it’s clearly flying off the shelves. At the time of writing, not all sizes were available on the M&S website (though I’ve noticed that sizes regularly come back in stock, and bear in mind you might want to go a size down), so if you’re keen and your size is up for grabs, I wouldn’t hang about.

If your size isn’t in stock, The Heritage Barn Jacket by Pilcro at Anthropologie, £165, is a lovely alternative, while I’m also loving Next’s Dark Brown Heritage Jacket, £95, which I reckon bears a striking resemblance to Barbour’s popular coats.
