There’s always that moment in the first half of the year when the sun decides to make an unexpected appearance, and I find myself swapping my trusty leggings (which I practically live in for 80% of the year) for shorts. This moment arrived last week for me, as I was preparing for a short holiday to Italy.
With temperatures significantly warmer than back home in the UK, it was definitely shorts weather – but my legs were still sporting their winter paleness. In an effort to boost my confidence while away, I reached for a tried-and-tested clear fake tan – and was reminded just how brilliant it is.
The product I’m talking about is Isle of Paradise Glow Clear Self-Tanning Mousse in Medium, which is currently on sale, reduced from £19.95 to £14.96. Known for being the brand used in the Barbie movie, Isle of Paradise prides itself on delivering natural-looking colours; you won’t find any orange streaks here. As someone who’s relatively new to fake tanning, here’s why this product wowed me…

Firstly, it’s pretty straightforward to apply with a mitt, although since it’s clear and doesn’t have a guide colour, you do need to be careful about blending it in well, particularly around drier areas like the knees, elbows, hands and feet (I prefer to apply a rich body cream in these areas first, and then again after applying the tan). However, because it’s transparent, it doesn’t transfer onto clothing or bedding – a huge bonus in my book, reports the Mirror.
When I finally got to check out the final result on holiday, once my shorts were on, I was seriously impressed with the outcome; my legs had a very natural golden hue, with any remaining greyness, redness or imperfections reduced. I felt really confident rocking my summer shorts and dresses while away, and not like some ghostly pale Brit who spends most of her life indoors.

I was also amazed at how long it lasted. A week later, back from holiday, it still looks pretty decent; not as golden and even as it initially did, but there’s definitely still a decent hint of colour there.
It does require a bit of time to ensure you’re applying it as thoroughly and evenly as possible, and it takes a few hours to develop – so it’s not one for a last-minute colour boost – but I was so pleased with the results that I’ll be making sure I use this before every holiday in the future.
If you’re in need of an instant glow, though, Vita Liberata’s Body Blur, £35, is a cult favourite, and a sophisticated and natural-looking alternative to traditional body make-up.
And for maintaining your tan and giving your face a subtle glow, myself and the rest of the beauty team swear by St Tropez Self Tan Purity Face Mist, now reduced from £24 to £19.20, for its super-fine spray and natural colour.
