Americans like myself can readily understand the fear and anger of our northern neighbours, but I plead with Canadians to reconsider your vacation plans.

Article content

Those of you who intend to bypass America for vacations will largely punish citizens who sympathize with you. You will only help President Trump by avoiding the New Jersey shore, Philadelphia and Boston’s Revolutionary sites, or our great New York City and other cities and states that voted against Trump. His policies are already damaging liberal cities that did not want him in the first place.

Go ahead: avoid Myrtle Beach and Daytona Beach, but return to the Big Apple, visit Independence Hall and swim in the waters of Wildwood and Atlantic City.

I am currently watching senators from Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York and Rhode Island speak out against Trump’s tariffs, and New Jersey Sen.  Cory Booker spoke for 25 hours this week to attack Trump’s policies and empathize with Canada and our many other democratic allies.

The influence of this collective network can offer excellent benefits to address Canada-U.S. tariffs and other issues.

These types of endeavours are also useful in developing “best practices” for pernicious issues facing both countries in small and larger cities including (but not exclusive to): overcrowding, aging infrastructure, rural/municipal divides, etc.

Article content

Totally aside from this, our two countries are neighbours; building upon longstanding relationships and expanding new ones serves us all in the short and longer term.

This is Canada’s chance to help other nations

Article content

Relatively speaking, Canada was somewhat spared from “The Wrath of The Trump.” But many, many far more fragile nations and protectorates were not spared the Magamerica financial flame thrower.

Article content

So, allowing for some time on the bench for Canada to look inward and catch its fiscal breath, I look forward to seeing my country regain its traditional stance in reaching out to a Developing World now smothering under Donald Trump’s crazy quilt of tariffs.
