Doing business in the U.S. seems really great right now
U.S. President Donald Trump has posted on Truth Social that he’s mad Apple is moving its production to India instead of the U.S., and he plans to add more tariffs to the iPhone as a rebuttal.
Previously, there were reports that Apple was going to need to raise prices due to tariffs, but it was looking at other ways to brand the price increase to avoid the wrath of Trump, but it seems like that plan is starting to fall apart.
On Truth Social Trump wrote, “I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s [sic] that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else. If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the U.S. Thank your [sic] for your attention to this matter!”
We won’t know until the fall, but I expect that if Apple has to raise the core iPhone price in the U.S., the prices in the rest of the world will follow.
While Trump is working to move more companies to the U.S., there is no precedent for something like the iPhone being built there. Back in April, when the trade war and tariffs were a little fresher, many reports came out explaining how hard and unreasonable it would be for Apple to make iPhones in the U.S.
