Ottawa police are investigating a homicide in Old Barrhaven as a murder-suicide.

Police were called to a home on Pheasant Run Drive at about 1 a.m. Tuesday morning, after Kurt Theoret made a 911 call before taking his own life, the Ottawa Police Service said in a release.

When they arrived, police found the bodies of both people at the home. Police identified the deceased as Virginia Theoret, 82, and Kurt Theoret, 84.

“This marks Ottawa’s 12th homicide of 2025,” the release read. “This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the family and friends affected.”

Gerri Gallo, 67, said she’s lived next to the deceased for nearly four decades. Her last conversation with her neighbour was just yesterday morning.

Gallo says the man would go on regular walks, and the woman enjoyed gardening, despite having several hip replacements.

“They kept to themselves and never bothered anybody,” Gallo said. “They were great people, great neighbours.”

Emily Robinson says she was woken up by several police lights at around 1 a.m. She lives a few houses down, and her bedroom window faces the deceased’s house.

“I was woken up (but) it was relatively quiet,” she said.

Robinson was on a walk with her three-year-old son Tuesday morning and only realized what happened when she walked past the house.

“(I’m) feeling slightly rattled,” she said.
