Vigilante group attacks police patrol team, kills officer in Taraba

A local vigilante group in Sandride village, Gassol local government area of Taraba state, has ambushed a special strike force team of the police on routine patrol, resulting in the death of one ASP Tapu Godfrey.
The deceased, bearing force number AP/NO 191462, was shot in the leg and pronounced dead by a medical doctor upon arrival at the hospital for treatment.
Taraba State Commissioner of Police, CP David Iloyanomon, in a statement on Wednesday, identified one Ali Dissol as leader of the vigilante group.
He said, “On 4/5/2024, a team of special strike force operatives attached to the Government House Taraba state, led by SP Jamu Emmanuel, were ambushed by a group of local vigilantes during routine patrol at Sandirde village, Gassol LGA.”
“The vigilante group fired indiscriminately, resulting in the injury of ASP Tapu Godfrey, force number AP/NO 191462, who was shot in the leg.

“A team of detectives from Gassol Division, led by the DCO, rushed to the scene and transported the victim to the General Hospital Sandirde for treatment, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.”
He further stated that during the command’s fact-finding mission, stakeholders in the area were engaged, and their resolution was to apprehend the attackers.
According to him, “The command has deployed intelligence and operational resources to sustain the manhunt for the fleeing attackers and bring the perpetrators of this senseless act to justice.”
“The gruesome murder of the officer is despicable and unwarranted.
“I extend my condolences to the family and friends of the deceased officer and use this medium to reassure the general public that no stone will be left unturned in combating crime and criminality
