These 400-thread-count sheets will feel like the crisp hotel sheets you love crawling into at the end of a long day. “They feel very cool to the touch,” our tester says. They’re made with long-staple organic cotton and are Oeko-Tex certified, meaning they’re free from harmful chemicals, pesticides, and GMOs.
Because they’re 100% cotton, they will wrinkle easily—even after you iron them, our tester found. But we still recommend them if finding a set made from organic materials is important to you.

The sheets are made of crisp, 270-thread-count cotton that’s produced in an Oeko-Tex–certified lab (i.e., they’re not made with harmful chemicals).
When we tried them, we instantly understood the hype: “I’m a sucker for a crisp, scratchy hotel sheet. These percale sheets from Brooklinen are just that, and I love all of the fun color options,” one SELF tester says. “They’re cooling for warm nights, and they drape beautifully on my bed.”

Linen wrinkles easily“When my Cozy Earth sheets need a break, I turn to this linen set from Brooklinen,” one SELF tester says. “They’re a bit scratchy, lightweight, yet still substantial in thickness—they haven’t fallen apart or pilled after a summer of washes,” she adds.
Linen is great for hot sleepers or warm weather—like bamboo, it helps you stay cool while you sleep. Just note that it creases easily: “Personally, I just love the look of linen; they can be wrinkled after being shoved in my drawers, but it adds to the effect,” our tester says.

Some reviewers say they’re too warm and wrinkle easilyOne SELF tester says these 100% cotton sheets have been her go-to since college: “They’re affordable, great for all seasons, and they soften a bit over time for a more lived-in feel.”
Target reviewers agree, adding how well the fitted sheet stays in place (even for rough sleepers). “These sheets are very comfortable and have double elastic on the corners of the fitted sheet, which helps them fit great and stay in place,” one wrote. “Highly recommend.”

Pros

On the pricey sideThese highly breathable sheets come with a 100-night trial, so you can make sure they work for you before you commit.
But take it from one SELF tester—you may not need that long to love them. “They’re actually as cooling to the touch as they promise but still feel cozy and soft enough to bundle yourself up in any season,” she says. “Ideal for people who run hot at night or who sleep with someone who runs extremely hot, like yours truly.”
Bamboo sheets are also an eco-friendly choice, Dr. Kaylor says, since they’re made from a sustainable and renewable resource.

Some reviewers report issues with durability and pillingAnother great option for hot sleepers, these bamboo sheets from Quince have a silky sheen and a luxuriously soft feel thanks to their 300 thread count. Plus you can get a set without a flat sheet, if you prefer just a fitted sheet on your bed.
“I was really pleasantly surprised at how nice these were! They look and feel like something you might see at a nice hotel,” one SELF tester says. “They’re a fraction of the price of other sheets that I own from fancy brands and feel just as luxurious. I got them about two and a half years ago, and they’re holding up really well—which is saying a lot, because I move around a lot in my sleep!”

Not the most breathable optionWrap yourself up in soft, cozy comfort with these flannel sheets that’ll remind you of cabin getaways and holiday trips. These sheets have some heft to them, so they’ll offer a mini version of the “ahhh” feeling you get from a weighted blanket.
While they’re less breathable than some of our other picks, they’re great at keeping heat in if you run cold (or like to bundle up at night).

What to look for when shopping for sheet sets
Experts help us break down the most common options:
“Cotton percale sheets are crisp, cool, and breathable, making them ideal for hot sleepers or warm climates,” Dr. Kaylor says. They’re also durable and soften with washing, but they can feel stiff at first and may wrinkle easily.“Cotton sateen sheets offer a smooth, silky texture with a slight sheen. They’re softer and warmer than percale, making them better suited for cooler climates; but they’re less breathable, prone to pilling, and can feel slippery,” Dr. Kaylor says.Linen sheets are known for their breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and durability—they’re ideal for warm weather. “Linen absorbs sweat quickly without feeling damp, and it’s naturally temperature-regulating,” Dr. Kaylor explains. “One downside is that linen sheets can feel rough initially, are prone to wrinkling, and require more care, but they will soften over time,” she adds.Bamboo is another good pick for hot sleepers because it’s naturally cooling, antimicrobial, and moisture-wicking. However, it tends to be less durable than other options, Dr. Kaylor says.“Similarly, eucalyptus sheets are incredibly soft and breathable, but are also expensive and prone to wear and pilling. This material is super absorbent, but still has a silky smooth texture,” Dr. Kaylor says.If you run cold, try flannel or wool sheets. “Wool is hypoallergenic, moisture-wicking, durable, and temperature-regulating,” Dr. Kaylor says. “Flannel sheets are warm, cozy, and durable—[they’re] often made from brushed cotton or wool.” One thing to note: Both of these materials require special care so they don’t shrink.Microfiber, polyester, and jersey sheets are budget-friendly and low-maintenance. Microfiber is soft, lightweight, and wrinkle-resistant, but it can trap heat and is prone to pilling. Polyester sheets are also less expensive, but they can feel synthetic and are less eco-friendly, Dr. Kaylor s ays. “Jersey sheets, with their soft and stretchy texture, feel like a comfortable T-shirt,” she adds. “They’re typically very affordable, wrinkle-resistant, and suitable for year-round use, but they lack the durability of woven fabrics and can lose their shape or stretch out over time.”Thread count refers to the number of threads that are woven into one square inch of fabric. “It’s said that the higher the thread count, the softer and more durable the fabric,” Dr. Kaylor says. “Most bedding experts would agree thread counts between 300 to 500 are excellent for comfort, breathability, and durability. Very high thread counts (over 1,000) are likely to be marketing gimmicks.”
But thread count isn’t everything: “That’s just one factor that influences fabric quality,” Dr. Kaylor adds. “While aesthetics and thread count may seem important, they won’t impact your sleep quality as significantly as choosing bedding that supports your ideal sleep temperature will.”
Some sheets require specific care, so you’ll want to look into the brand’s instructions and make sure you can follow them before investing in a set.
Dr. Kaylor also recommends washing new sheets right out of the box to help remove chemicals, bacteria, and allergens before putting them on your bed for the first time. “Avoid strong, heavily scented detergents, as residual fragrances can cause skin irritation or disrupt sleep,” Dr. Kaylor says. “Instead, pick a hypoallergenic detergent for sensitive skin.”
If you’re using a dryer, select a low to medium heat setting to prevent shrinkage and damage.
How we tested these sheetsFirst, we spoke with experts to get an idea of which materials are best for certain types of sleepers. Then, we rounded up sheet sets from some of the most popular brands (like Brooklinen, Buffy, Parachute, and more) and slept on them for weeks. We also made sure to wash them multiple times, so we could be confident they’ll hold up over time. Only sets that passed every part of our test with flying colors and helped us get a better night’s rest made it into our final list.
