The Basque club have only won the competition twice in their history, and though their last triumph was as recent as 2020, it didn’t feel like much of a triumph as it was played behind closed doors during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. How dearly their fans would love to be able to witness and celebrate another trophy win in proper fashion.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, have ample trophies in their cabinet, though the Copa del Rey hasn’t been their most successful stomping ground over the years. They’ve only won it 20 times. ‘Only’ is a massive stretch, of course, but if we look to their perennial rival and yardstick, Barcelona, they lag far behind, with Barça boasting 31 titles.
In fact, Madrid aren’t even the competition’s most successful club, with Athletic Bilbao – Sociedad’s Basque neighbours – sitting on 24 titles.
In terms of progress through the Copa del Rey so far, Real Sociedad have beaten Conquense 1-0, Ponferradina 2-0, Rayo Vallecano 3-1, and Osasuna 2-0 in the quarter-final.
Real Madrid have played a game less having entered the competition late due to their involvement in the Supercopa, but they’ve beaten Deportivo Minera 5-0 and Celta Vigo 5-2 before squeezing past Leganes 3-2 in the quarter-final.
As for league form, Real Madrid are once again in the hunt for the La Liga title. They currently sit second, level on points with Barcelona and one ahead of Atlético Madrid, who played each other last night. Real Sociedad are having a decent enough campaign in mid-table in ninth place as it stands.
