WHO WILL SAVE ME

WHO WILL SAVE ME

“We were all locked up in a prison, waiting for the next day to come so we would be buried alive since we didn’t have any option other than to die.

“In the prison with my dad and mom,” Mike’s dad asked, “Mike, are you really sure you don’t know anything about all these accusations?”

“Even if he is innocent, you and I know that we will definitely die because there is no proof,” Mom added.

“I’m innocent, Dad, believe me. I don’t know anything about all these accusations. I was bathing one day when I saw someone sneaked into my room. Before I could shout and get out of the bathhouse, the man already escaped, and I don’t even know the person. I’m sure he was the one who put the necklace under my bed,” Mike said.

“Hmm, this is serious, Mike. Are you quarreling with anyone? Or are you in a fight with anyone?” Mom asked.

“Mum, you know me very well. I’m not that kind of person. I’m not fighting or quarrelling with anyone,” Mike replied.

“We only have tomorrow, Mike. Since you claim you are innocent, what are we going to do now? Who will save us? The vigilantes are not ready to listen to you. There is no hope for us. Once we are locked up in this prison, we will surely die,” Dad said, crying.

“God of our ancestors, if truly my son is innocent, please come to our rescue. Don’t let us die because of a crime we knew nothing about,” Mom added, tears dropping from her eyes.

The next day, early in the morning, we were still at the prison when some of the vigilantes came.

“Hey you, bring them out. It is time. We will never live together with people like this,” one of the vigilantes ordered.

Lo and behold, we were brought out and led to the spot where they had been burying people alive.

My mom couldn’t hold herself, so she was screaming and lamenting.

“Whoever that is responsible for this predicament, be it a man or a woman, I curse their entire generation, from the first generation even to the seventh generation. From the bottom of my heart, they shall never know peace. They will die a painful death. They will suffer till they die,” Mom said.

A few minutes later, we were already at the spot, all the villagers gathered, both the young and the adults. Some were crying while others were making a mockery of us.

“Chaiii, human beings are very deep. Look at his innocent face. Who could have believed that Mike, we all know to be a gentle guy, has been pretending all this while, without knowing he is a pathological thief? Look at what he has brought upon his innocent parents,” one of the villagers said.

“Eyaaaa, chai, a whole Mike? I can’t fathom the meaning of this. So Mike is a thief?” another villager added.

“I only feel sad for his innocent parents. Wonders shall never end in this world. Who could have believed that Mike and his parents are going to die today just like this?” another villager also said.

“No, I’m not sure this is true. I know Mike very well. He has been my childhood friend. He is not someone who steals. He is innocent. I wish there is any way I can help him out of this. Oh God, who is behind all this? People are very wicked in this world. How can someone just wish the death of his colleague? Hmm, God of our ancestors, come to their rescue,” Mike’s friend also added.

“Even though I don’t know him much, I know he is innocent. I’ve been seeing him around. He doesn’t even talk much. I pray gods of our ancestors come through for them,” one woman said.

“Chai, don’t even say that. Human beings are unpredictable. Do you know what he has been doing secretly? See, don’t trust anyone in this life oooo,” another woman also added.

“The vigilantes already dug a hole the previous day. So, we are about to end their lives here as how we always do it to serve as a warning to anyone who is planning to indulge in stealing. No room for thieves in this community. I repeat, no room for thieves in this community,” the commander of the vigilantes said.

“Please, my son is innocent. Don’t kill us. We are pleading,” Mom said with tears.

“Please listen to us. Don’t do this to us, please,” Dad replied.

“Ewoo, ewooo, ewoo, God of vengeance. I am innocent, we are innocent. Don’t let me die, don’t let us die, don’t forsake us, let justice prevail now. Arrest whoever that is behind this predicament. Gods of our ancestors, don’t let that person rest until he or she confesses,” Mike sang while his eyes were filled with tears.

After I sang, the weather changed immediately as if it was about to drizzle. There was heavy lightning and thunderstorms.

“As it stands now, there is nothing we can do. You don’t have any proof, okay? I don’t want to hear anything from you or you again,” the commander of the vigilantes said, pointing his hand at Mike’s forehead.

“Please, then, kill me and leave my parents alone. I don’t want them to die, please,” Mike said.

“No, my son, let me die rather. You are still young to die. I love you so much,” Mom also said.

“Please, I’m begging you people, leave my wife and my son out of this. I want to give my life for them,” Dad also said.

“Enough of all this. Are you people new to the taboos of this great community? Now, you and you, untie them and throw them into the hole,” the vigilantes’ commander ordered.

Lo and behold, without hesitating, these vigilantes threw us into the hole. They were about to cover us with sand when someone from afar off said, “Stop it, those people are innocent. Leave them alone for a curse shall befall this community if they die. I know the person behind all this.”

At this point, everyone was quiet. The whole place was like a cemetery. We were already in the pit when we heard the voice.

“Who are you, and what are you talking about?” one of the vigilantes asked.

“I’m a great seer from the next village. Bring those people out from the hole, for they are innocent,” the man replied.

“Hey man, do you think we are joking here? Oh, I see, you want us to bury you together with them?” one vigilante said.
